I recently signed up with Expedia for a service. At the time I was asked if I would like to receive promotional emails. I chose “NO”, as they are not a service I would use often in comparison to the amount of marketing I would expect from them.
Interestingly enough, I did receive this email explaining how they would like to follow CASL anti-spam legislation, and therefore, could I provide Consent for them to send emails to me. Again, I will choose not to follow through, but I already did this when I didn’t choose the option at the first opportunity. If you look at the overall email you will see they say “If you do not provide your express consent now, that’s okay. We will continue to send you Expedia.ca emails, but there may come a time when we have to stop.”
I’m not sure why Expedia feels this is complying to CASL rules, but currently it appears they have found a work around that works for them. It will be interesting to see if they pay for it in the future.
